President Trump Nominates Tara Sweeney as the Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs

October 17, 2017

Today, the White House announced the nomination of Tara Sweeney to serve as the Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs in the Department of the Interior. Ms. Sweeney is the Executive Vice President of External Affairs for the Arctic Slope Regional Corporation, the largest locally-owned and operated business in Alaska, with revenues in excess of $2 billion and more than 10,000 employees worldwide. She previously served as the board chair of the Arctic Economic Council, a broad diplomatic and scientific organization that represents eight countries in regard to business decisions in the arctic.

Tara has been actively engaged as an advocate for self-determination for tribal governments, Alaska Native Villages, and corporations. We believe tribal economies are strongest when armed with knowledgeable leaders at the federal level. We look forward to working with Tara in her new role.” said NAFOA’s President Tina Danforth.

Ms. Sweeney has lived most of her life in rural Alaska. She is a graduate of Cornell University with a B.S. in Industrial and Labor Relations.
