7-28-2020 Morning COVID-19 Brief

July 28, 2020

Last night, the Senate introduced a series of bills that will serve as the basis for negotiations going forward. It is important to note that these bills will serve as a floor for negotiations. We are hoping to host a discussion centered on items that may impact Indian Country so we all can work to come together and focus our advocacy efforts over the next week (or month) as the next round of funding comes together.

It is also important to note that this is not one bill, but a bunch of bills built by committees. That means there will be negotiations between Senate Republicans and House Democrats and there will be continued negotiations with Senate Republicans and Senate Democrats to ensure there will be enough support for a final bill.

Thank you for joining the discussion and for your work to help Indian Country.

NIHB - Medicaid Letter

  • Yesterday, NIHB alongside Tribal Nations, NCAI, NCUIH and regional Tribal organizations submitted a letter to Senate Finance Committee strongly opposing a policy that would extend 100% FMAP to certain states for the Medicaid services that non-Indian Health Care Providers give to American Indians/Alaska Natives.
  • The policy does nothing to further the fulfillment of treaty obligations for healthcare, would undo decades of precedent in federal Medicaid law towards Tribes, and would stabilize fledgling state Medicaid budgets at the direct expense of the chronically underfunded Indian health system. In other words, it’s a really, really bad idea.
