Policy Alert: Register for the White House Tribal Broadband Briefing Tomorrow
February 17, 2022
Tomorrow, the White House will be hosting a special inter-agency Tribal broadband briefing from 2:30 PM-4:30 PM Eastern Time. The session will be focused on highlighting the current and upcoming opportunities to support Tribal broadband development through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the American Rescue Plan (ARP), and other programs available. The White House has just announced nearly $10 million in broadband funding from the Department of Commerce, Treasury, and Agriculture to provide reliable high-speed internet to Tribal Nations across the country.
Previously, the Biden Administration signed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law which provided $65 billion in broadband programs with $2 billion going directly towards tribal communities. In order to ensure affordability for tribal nations, the law will also require companies that receive this funding to provide at least one low-cost broadband option for consumers as well as directing the Federal Communications Commission to adopt rules that make it easier for consumers to understand and compare broadband plans offered. Last year, the Tribal Broadband Connectivity Program was also passed as part of the American Rescue Plan and directed close to $1 billion for tribal governments to improve and build upon their broadband infrastructure.
