Yesterday the Republican majority in the House voted to approve H.R.1 The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. The final vote was 227 in favor and 205 against. All of the Democrats opposed the bill, and over a dozen Republicans joined them.
NAFOA, NCAI, and others have worked tirelessly in recent years to educate Congress on tribal tax provisions which would help stimulate tribal economic growth, but these provisions are not present in either the passed House version or the Senate version of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
Both NAFOA and NCAI have released a joint press release opposing the bill. The Senate bill is still in committee. Together, the organizations call on tribal governments to oppose the bill as well and contact their Senators to urge them to vote NO on the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
