Policy Alert: Labor Dept Webinar on Mental Health Benefits Aug 29th

On Thursday, August 29th, from 2-3 p.m. ET, NAFOA will host a webinar with the Department of Labor’s Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA).

This presentation will provide an overview of the Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 (MHPAEA) for those who oversee the administration of employer-sponsored group health plans. Speakers from the U.S. Department of Labor, Employee Benefits Security Administration will discuss parity requirements between mental health/substance use disorder (MH/SUD) benefits and medical/surgical benefits provide by employer-sponsored plans. Topics will include Non-Quantitative Treatment Limitations (NQTLs) and Quantitative Treatment Limitations (QTLs) to be aware of when ensuring plan compliance.

About Our Speakers

Tara Causland, Benefits Advisor, U.S. Department of Labor Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA)

Causland advises on private-sector employee benefit plans for plan participants, sponsors, and service providers. She formerly worked as an investigator at the Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA), auditing health and retirement plans. Causland holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Washington School of Law, where she was a member of the Washington Law Review and co-chair of the Law Revue Variety Show. 

Jamidi Daiess, Senior Advisor for Health Investigations for the San Francisco Regional Office and Seattle District Office, U.S. Department of Labor Employee Benefits Security Administration

Daiess oversees the health enforcement program for Northern California, Nevada, Utah, Oregon, Idaho, Washington, and Alaska. She joined the agency in 2005 as an Investigator and became a Senior Investigator in 2009, handling complex civil and criminal cases. Daiess specializes in enforcing the Affordable Care Act and the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA), earning five Secretary of Labor’s Exceptional Achievement Awards for her work. She holds a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, and a B.A. in Behavioral Studies from Concordia College in New York.
