PDX’s New Mass‑Timber Roof Celebrates Local Tribal Partnerships
Portland International Airport’s stunning 9‑acre mass‑timber roof isn’t just an architectural showpiece—it’s a powerful tribute to collaboration with four Pacific Northwest Tribes. Crafted from sustainably harvested Douglas fir sourced within 300 miles and milled by Yakama, Coquille, Skokomish, and Cow Creek Umpqua Nations, this roof weaves Indigenous forestry traditions into a massive public space. Using “less desirable” trees to preserve the healthiest growth, it not only strengthens ecosystems but also economies, ensuring a legacy of cultural recognition, environmental stewardship, and regional pride.
