We look forward to convening for NAFOA’s 2024 Fall Finance & Tribal Economies Conference on September 23-24, 2024. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in educational sessions focused on growing their tribe’s economy, as well as explore the vibrant city of San Diego.

2. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:

In 2021, Congress passed the Corporate Transparency Act, which creates new reporting requirements on beneficial ownership information (BOI). The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, a bureau of the U.S. Department of the Treasury, released new FAQs related to Tribally-owned entities and individual Tribal-member owned businesses chartered under Tribal law.

3. SCHOLARSHIP: 2024-2025 NATIVE AGRICULTURE & FOOD SYSTEMS SCHOLARSHIP
Application Deadline: July 25, 2024, 5:00 p.m. Mountain Time
First Nations Development Institute’s Native Agriculture and Food Systems Investments Scholarship program supports Native American, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian college students who are entering agriculture and food systems fields so that they can better assist their communities with their food systems efforts.
First Nations will award 20 to 25 scholarships in the amount of $1,000 to $1,500 each for the 2024-2025 academic school year to Native college or university students majoring in agriculture and agriculture-related fields. These fields include – but are not limited to – agribusiness management, agri-science technologies, agronomy, animal husbandry, aquaponics, environmental studies, fisheries and wildlife, food production and safety, food-related policy and legislation, food science and technology, horticulture, irrigation science, and sustainable agriculture or food systems programs.
4. COMMUNITY: FREE FINANCIAL COACHING AVAILABLE TO TRIBAL CITIZENS
Since June 2020, with grant support from the Wells Fargo Foundation, the Oklahoma Native Assets Coalition, Inc. (ONAC) has been offering three types of free financial coaching to tribal citizens across the United States: 1) credit counseling, 2) homebuyer education, and 3) financial management (i.e. budgeting). Confidential sessions are offered one-on-one, by teleconference (Zoom) or phone call, with a Native certified credit counselor, homebuyer education provider, and financial educator.
Typically, these sessions will last for an hour and are scheduled at a mutually agreeable time. Thus far, ONAC has offered this free financial coaching to those participating in ONAC’s other programming. Now, ONAC is offering these financial coaching services to a wider group of tribal constituents.
5. JOBS:
CONTROLLER, COMMON FUTURE
Reporting to the Vice President of Finance, the Controller will be responsible for the overall management and implementation of Common Future’s accounting operations. The Controller will oversee the day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, payroll, leases, and balance sheet management for all bank account reconciliations. The Controller will also be responsible for the close of the month-end and year-end books, assisting independent auditors with annual audits and tax returns, and assisting with the financial analysis of our organization. The Controller serves as a key financial consultant to the VP of Finance assists in short and long-term operational support processes and provides strategic solutions for resolving organizational issues as well as the financial implementation of new initiatives.
